AFL
Looks like the AFL has a new blood rivalry. Last night, Sunday the 13th of April, gather round in Adelaide concluded with a Hawthorn, the current top team to beat going 4-0, battling it out with Port Adelaide going 1-3, a team that’s had a rough start to the season.
If you were presented with only this information, you’d think the game would be a relatively easy pick for Hok-Ball to get up again and get their revenge for the finals last year where Port Adelaide knocked out hawthorn in the semis. I, having watched a lot of footy that weekend already, elected not to view the game as I assumed the game would be a one-sided thrashing of Port. Though when I checked the score shortly into the 2nd quarter to see that the score was Port 70 – 8 Hawthorn I was shell shocked and turned the game on.
Whilst Hawthorn made an incredible effort to bring the game back, you could see the teams had tensions boiling. With several scuffles breaking out and the crowds and teams growing more aggressive. Has the AFL just found its newest hot-blooded rivalry? Port Adelaide beating Hawthorn was the last thing I think any non-Port fan expected to see yesterday.
NRL
Round 6 has finished, and things are starting to look increasingly worse for Penrith. This stage having lost their last four games, they went into this round going up against the Dolphins, a side they’ve never lost too. But it seems Penrith has a long way to go to find their footing as the 4-peat premiers. The side losing out to the Dolphins 30-12 at full-time.
Whilst Penrith are far from out of the contest and still have the chance to make the 8 this year, after the last 5-years time was always going to catch up to them. With a few key players having moved on or not playing, it seems more than anything else the side just can’t out fit their opposition like they’re used too. Who knows, things may click and we could see them climb the ladder back into the 8 later this year, but as of round 6. Things aren’t looking too hot.
Super Rugby Womens
It was David vs Goliath in another Reds vs Warratahs Super Rugby Women’s grand final on Saturday. It was 5-time champs Warratahs Goliath facing the Reds, who’ve played many finals but have never beaten the Warratahs David.
Facing off on Saturday in Sydney it was a high scoring game that for most of the game was a tight-nit contest. Warratahs consistently holding the lead for the majority of the game. But half-way into the second half things clicked into place for the dominating NSW side. As their lead grew larger and larger in the last 15-minutes victory it seemed was all but certain for the Warratahs to become 6-time Super Rugby Champions. With the final score being 42-21.
F1
Oscar Piastri has also secured his second F1 victory of the season in Bahrain.
The McLaren driver has secured won his fourth win in his F1 career in Bahrain in a tight race that saw George Russell in second and Charles Leclrec in third. A safety car was sent to clear some debris at turn three during the race that allowed Piastri and rivals to make a beneficial ‘free’ pit stop. But when the race restarted chaos ensued, concluding with Piastri’s victory.
