New data from the RSPCA have revealed some frightening statistics on animal welfare in the region.

In the last financial year, data revealed the Pyrenees Shire ranked first in Victoria for total alleged cruelty reports per 1,000 residents.

The total number of animals seized or surrendered in the Hepburn Shire region also rose to 101, 80 more than in 2022/23 and the sixth highest amount in the state.

That’s compared to just seven animals in the Ballarat region.

The RSPCA’s Shannon Walsh says the rise may be attributed to animals coming in from a single property.

He has urged residents to reach out if they’re struggling to care for their pets.

“I think we can all say the cost-of-living crisis is impacting everyone, and I think it’s really important for pet owners to recognise this early on and reach out for help and support before things get too hard,” he said.
