New memorial honours firefighters lost in Linton bushfires

The Geelong West fire brigade have unveiled a new memorial at their station, honouring five of its members who lost their lives in the 1998 Linton bushfires.

Hundreds gathered on Saturday for a commemorative service.

25 years ago, Matthew Armstrong, Jason Thomas, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson and Garry Vredeveldt from the brigade were killed fighting the fire, due to a savage wind change.

CFA Deputy Chief Officer, Rohan Luke, saying the tragic day resulted in the biggest safety change in the fire authority’s history, with the introduction of mandatory minimum skills for firefighters.

Mr. Luke says they’ll honour the firefighter’s legacy by continuing to improve their training, equipment and practices.
