The number of homes that have signed up for the City of Ballarat’s soft plastics recycling trial has been solid, but there’s still work to be done.
Council, in conjunction with the Australian Food and Grocery Council, launched the 12-month pilot earlier this month, allowing registered locals to put their soft plastics in a council-supplied orange bag and then drop them in their yellow-lid bin to be recycled.
Around 1,800 households have already agreed to participate in the 12-month long scheme, with the city hoping for around 10,000.
Mayor Des Hudson says he’d also like to see schools involved.
“One of the things I spoke to the team about [and is] an opportunity to grow the numbers quickly, is potentially partnering with some of our local schools,” he said.
“Where school kids who learn about sustainability and environmental awareness, whether they might be a great opportunity for families to be able to register from their school.”
