Billions will go towards road and rail projects in the region, funded in the Federal Government’s latest budget.
$1.1 billion will go towards upgrading the Western Freeway between Melton and Caroline Springs, including $100 million for planning and early works to upgrade Warrenheip’s Brewery Tap Road freeway intersection.
$2 billion will also go to making Sunshine Station a regional rail services hub.
The station will connect to the future Melbourne Airport Rail Link, supporting Ballarat train passengers.
Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, says the project disentangles the rail network.
“It’s a major congestion point for our rail system, and [the upgrade] will allow for better times for regional rail [such as] Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong going through there.
“What that means is you can get off at Sunshine and head to the airport, or you just keep on going to Southern Cross on our own dedicated line,” she said.
