Local javelin thrower misses out at world championships

A veteran javelin thrower from Ballarat has missed out on a podium position at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest.

Kathryn Mitchell reportedly left the arena in tears after tearing her adductor muscle in her final warm up of the women’s javelin event, minutes before the final began.

The 41-year-old has represented Australia in the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, coming first at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and breaking a games record.

It wasn’t all bad news for Aussies in the javelin event, with Mackenzie Little claiming a bronze medal with a throw of 63.38 metres.

Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi took the gold with a throw of 66.73 metres.
