The Chinese Australian Cultural Society of Ballarat says its hopeful it can open a new museum in Canadian at some stage this year.
The plan is to open it in the historic Victory House on Geelong Road which has links back to the Chinese post the gold rush in 1906.
The building was recently saved from demolition by developers after much debate at Ballarat town hall.
Society President Michelle Philips says they’re hoping to have it open by Heritage Weekend if approvals get granted.
“We are still plugging away with permits where there’s been Heritage Victoria recognition, which is great, but it also slows down the process a little bit.”
“You can’t change things without doing it exactly correctly which of course is what we want to do,” Mrs. Philips said.
According to The Royal Historical Society of Victoria the cottage was built by James Wong Chung, who named it after the winner of the 1902 Melbourne Cup, ’The Victory’.
His family lived there until 2008 and during this time it had a central role for Ballarat’s Chinese Community.
