Members of the Ancient Society of College Youths, a nearly 400-year-old organisation of bellringers, have made their presence known in Ballarat today.

The ASCY, founded in 1637, is one of the United Kingdom’s oldest bellringing societies, and its ringers are widely regarded as some of the very best in the world.

They’ve rung a three-hour long peal, all from memory, at the cities two bell towers in Sturt Street, one at the Town Hall the other at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

Local bellringer Laura Goodin says Ballarat has two quality towers.

“The Town Hall bells are lovely, and the ringing chamber is spacious which is a luxury because usually you’re crammed at the top of a tower, and they sound fabulous.”

“The St. Peters’ bells are also just lovely, they’re a joy to ring,” Ms. Goodin said.
