The $655 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment has entered its final stage.
Preparations for the new hospital tower and emergency department have begun, with excavation, piling and demolition work taking place over the next 12 months.
It’s expected the main works will support up to 480 jobs during the peak of its construction.
The new emergency department will include a mental health and alcohol and other drugs hub to provide specialized care to patients.
A state-of-the-art operating theatre suite, women’s and children’s hub and an extra 100 inpatient and short stay beds will also be included in the upgrades.
The redeveloped hospital will be able to treat at least 18,000 more emergency patients and 14,500 more inpatients a year once construction is complete.
The upgrade is set to finish in 2027.
