The Ballarat Animal Shelter re-homed almost 1,000 animals last year, according to new figures.
Cats led the way with more than 600 adoptions, whilst 352 dogs found new homes.
Also adopted out were three rabbits and a pig.
There is a re-homing fee of $420 for dogs and $140 for cats at the shelter.
As the animals settle into new homes, new owners are also being warned of the dangers of summer heat.
Hot pavements can potentially burn their paws, with ground temperatures soaring into the 50 and 60’s.
The Ballarat Veterinary Practice’s Dr. Stewart Greedy says some breeds can suffer heat stress more than others due to their respiratory system.
