Ballarat pet-lovers are encouraged to treat a furry friend at the local animal shelter this Christmas.

Donations of treats like pig ears, peanut butter or collars brighten up the animals not with a family over the festive season.

The shelter will also accept donations of leads, toys and unopened wet or dry food.

Items are shared with local organisations, including the Soup Bus and Uniting, to help locals experiencing hardship that also have pets.

Donations can be made at the Gillingham Road shelter in Alfredton weekdays between 9am and 5pm or at the Ballarat Town Hall between 9am and 5pm weekdays or 10am and 4pm on weekdays.
