WorkSafe Victoria are investigating after the services union raised concerns council workers were being exposed to silica dust during the Bridge Mall redevelopment.
Crystalline silica can be found in engineered stone, granite and sandstone pavers and can lead to a number of deadly diseases if inhaled.
The City of Ballarat says council contractors and management have implemented controls to reduce the risk of dust exposure, which WorkSafe has reviewed.
However, the union believes the authority didn’t conduct testing whilst workers were performing their duties.
A WorkSafe spokesperson says inspectors are making enquiries to ensure occupational health and safety obligations are being met.
