A Central Victorian pub at the centre of alleged ongoing homophobic attacks is shutting its doors.

The Cumberland Smeaton, west of Daylesford, was forced to close in late February after owner James Consiglio was struck by a car, allegedly driven by a man involved in homophocic attacks on the pub’s owners.

It was reportedly the latest in a series of similar incidents at the hotel in the weeks prior.

Despite re-opening two weeks later, James and husband Caleb have now officially closed the venue amid reports of hate, harassment, and rising costs.

In a social media post the pair said they could no longer cover the cost of repairs at the pub, or support a workplace operating under dangerous conditions for its workers.

The Consiglios also said they were not expecting the amount of hate and harrassment doled out by a small section of the community.

With the venue now closed, anyone who has unredeemed vouchers for The Cumberland is entitled to a full refund, as per a statement from the owners.
