The push to have the Central Goldfields region become World Heritage Listed has received a major boost.
The Andrews Labor Government has invested half a million dollars to help in shortlisting potential world heritage sites in the region, and for the project’s masterplan in getting the bid all the way to UNESCO.
Ballarat City Council in conjunction with the City of Greater Bendigo and 11 other councils recently lobbied for the funding, which is to be one of the first steps in promoting the region as a world heritage candidate.
The $500,000 funding announcement by Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford has paved the way for a submission to the Australian Government to add the Central Victorian Goldfields onto Australia’s World Heritage tentative list.
Work will now begin on identifying Central Goldfields sites that may have the attributes needed to make the World Heritage list.
